Artist unveils magnificent South Melbourne mansion

Artist Josef Brunhuber is brushing aside his magnificent South Melbourne home of 33 years to downsize.

The emerging Austrian-born painter — who pursued his passion for art at age 71 after a long career in design — has $6.5-$7 million price hopes for the 1906-built mansion at 313 Park St.

CoreLogic records show if that price is achieved, the property will finally eclipse 49 Howe Cres’s 2011 sale worth $6.25 million to set a new residential record for the suburb.

Hocking Stuart Albert Park director David Wood said he believed the double-storey, five-bedroom residence originally belonged to a doctor, as it featured an impressive foyer that would have functioned as a “reception area”.

The entry way has a grand staircase, timber-lined ceiling, embossed wallpaper and “plaster work depicting hunting scenes”.

Brunhuber’s striking paintings also decorate the walls, these days.

Other old-world elements include eight marble and timber fireplaces, a servants’ passage and original leadlight.

Mr Wood said Mr Brunhuber renovated shortly after taking on the home in the prized St Vincent Gardens precinct.

The next owner could live there comfortably as is, or update it.

The buyer could even extend up a level without altering the facade to “take advantage of the bay and city views you’d have”, the agent said.

“It’s already a landmark home for the district — it’s one of very few grand Federation-era homes,” he said.

“But it could be turned into one of the best in the district.”

The property is being sold privately.

CoreLogic records show it last changed hands in 1986 for $380,000.
